TOEFL Independent Essay ( Nepal Earthquake 2015)

Hello,

Today, I have another TOEFL Ind Essay practice for you. I know the TOEFL essay doesn't revolve around the news. But, the writing process is still the same. You choose a side, and give reasons why.

TOEFL Ind Essay (Nepal)- Do you agree or disagree with this statement. China will never be happy with what they have. They will always want more.

** This is in response to the fact that many people think China is only helping Nepal for political reasons.***

TOEFL Ind Essay Example #3 ( Nepal Earthquake)

Hello,

The Nepal earthquake images still continue to scatter across the news.  Today, I will change the wording  of another TOEFL Independent essay to let you use the Nepal Earthquake as a reference point. On the TOEFL, you won't  to read any additional information on the topic. But, I will share a popular FB post going around right now to help you write your essay.

For people abroad wanting to volunteer in Nepal right now. As a Nepali, I can say this is very heartwarming. Thank You !
But, please remember Nepal is still unstable at the moment. You want to help so you can make things better not worse.
We would hate to see you in danger because of us. We don't want to see stranded at an airport not knowing where to go, what to do. We don't want to see alone because we are not capable of hosting you right now. And also, we need to focus on rescuing the people who are in the country right now.
We appreciate your offer to help but right now, Nepal needs to organise from within. When things get calm, and we are better organized. When Nepali people living in Nepal need rest but still need to rebuild, PLEASE do come and help us.
Remember we want to reduce the stress not increase it. So, please stay safe where you are. You can help by updating people about the earthquake, rescue and medical camps, donating to organizations, sharing missing people's posts and sending Nepal lots of positive energy !

The author here encourages people to wait to volunteer for several different reasons. Do you agree that Nepal should not accept any volunteers from abroad yet? Give reasons to support your answer.

TOEFL Ind Essay ( Nepal Topic #2)

TOEFL Ind essay practice with Nepal Earthquake as a topic #2

I can't stop thinking about these people in Nepal. Here is another topic for you

You can watch this Nepal Earthquake video here to inspire your writing..

TOEFL Essay:

After a natural disaster, (earthquake, flood, tsunami, etc.) people volunteer for many different reasons. (for example, personal satisfaction, personal interest, career experience) Why do you think people will volunteer their time in Nepal after this earthquake?

TOEFL Ind Essay Examples (With Nepal Earthquake as a reference point)

The Nepal earthquake took the lives of many yesterday. This week,  I will post one TOEFL Independent Essay example question and change the words so you can write about the Nepal earthquake as a reference point. The news will be loaded with pictures, and videos. So, we might as well use it to our advantage.

Example 1:  If you could change one thing about how the media is covering the Nepal earthquake, what would it be? Give reasons and examples to support your answer.

Feel free to bring your essays to class on Saturday for feedback.

TOEFL Writing Tip

The TOEFL Independent essay forces TOEFL students to come up with specific examples to support your personal examples.

This TOEFL Writing tips video explains a small part of the essay.

Some basic notes to go along with the video.

Two tips :

Professional Examples/ Academic Example- TOEFL revolves around academic work. So, it is best to speak the test graders' language. Try to come up with these kinds of examples whenever possible

True: Try to come up with a true example if you can. But, if you are good at making up a story, don't be afraid to do so.

How to learn to come up with example:

Take a TOEFL example question:

People attend college or university for many reasons. (for example: new experience, career preparation, etc.) Why do you think people attend university?

Your job: Come up with two keywords.

Example:  Social experience: make friends, personal experience
Career: Connections , learned how to teach

TOEFL Reading Lecture Part 2 & 3

Here are my notes on the TOEFL reading lectures I previously posted.

TOEFL Reading Lecture Part 2

TOEFL Reading Lecture Part 3

Basic Process (Detail Questions 3-4)
1.     Find the keywords in the question
·        Very important
2.     Find the keyword sentence in the reading
·        Look for Synonym language (Questions normally have synonyms)
3.     Read only the keyword sentence in the passage( This is for, Basic questions: detail questions, purpose questions, inference)

·        If the next sentence starts with connecting language

·        Answers come after the connecting language

·        If keyword sentence starts with connecting language, answer is in previous sentence
4.     Read the proper answer and pick the answer that matches the same meaning
Example Question: Who was the first president of America?
Now, we know the keywords are something like: first president
Don’t forget to be aware of synonyms,  the question could be: Who was the first leader of America? ( Leader= synonym)
Now, go to the passage.  Find the words: First president and you know that is where your answer is.
Purpose Question (Example terms: mention, say- What does he mean when he says/mentions this)
1.)   Find the keywords in the question
2.)  Find the keyword sentence
3.)  Read the sentence before the keyword sentence ( Example- If someone is late to class, to find out why they are late, you must look before.)
4.)  Find the matching purpose in the answers
Inference Question ( what inference must be true)
*** Might be true, possibly true= Impossible***
·        Pick the answer that must be true
Example: Two weeks ago, somebody says if I don’t come to class, I decided to get married. Two weeks later, the student is not in class.
Answer choices 1.) Car accident 2.) Got married 3.) Student is scared 4.) Student is sick
Pick the answer that must be true
Example 2: What can we infer by paragraph 3?
Inference question uses one of the following words usually: What does it suggest? What does it imply?
Negative Factual ( True/False Question- All of the following are true except….)
1.)  Find the keywords in the answer choices
2.)  Find the keywords in each paragraph to determine if the answer is true or false
Example:  All of the following for people are running for president except
A.) The cowboy from Taiwan B.) The governor of Mexico C.) The banker from Massachusets D.) The lawyer from Japan
Keywords= cowboy, governor, banker, lawyer
Use each keyword and see if they are running for president.
If it says the cowboy from Taiwan is running for vice-president. There is your answer.

Vocabulary Questions
1.)  Learn lots of vocabulary (obviously)
2.)  Study vocab in synonym groups- Example: Write the word intermittent on the front of a notecard, and five synonyms on the back
3.)  Look at the root word- (take off prefix and suffix)
4.)  Context- look the sentence before and after
5.)  Context clues- Example:  or means the word will mean the same-, but- means the word will mean opposite
6.)   Look at the verb
7.)   Substitution ( take out the vocab word, put your own word, (not an answer choice) then finding the matching word
** Never go off what sounds right. They are all meant to sound right***
Read the question and see the vocabulary word
·        Don’t look at the answer yet (if you’re unclear)
·        Look at the word in the sentence and find the meaning using one of the strategies

**Connecting language/ transition- so, now, this means, that means, for example, as a result,

Help TOEFL Students Stop Saying Um

Students often use the word um, any time they are searching for their next word. An easy way to fix this is to just make a short pause in your sentence while you think of the next word. The pause won't effect your score at all. Here is a quick video highlighting the same thing- Stop Saying Um

Reasons To Take The TOEFL

I found this on Yahoo answers from a very well-respected TOEFL teacher.

Just to give you some added encouragement:)

It's a very prestigious exam and it's highly respected in the States, and of course countries that are close to the States or look up to them.

- It's assessed by Princeton experts: if there are people whose opinion on your English command is to be listened, it's them (and of course Cambridge).

- It gives you more confidence once you know where you are.

- It's directed by and at an academic public.

- It's very-well organised, so the margin of error is slim.

- It's very clear in its results.
